HAD MY FIRST JOB INTERVIEW THIS MORNING!!!
Slept late last night, around 12:45 so I slept in until 9:00 today. Got ready and made a small turkey/chopped salad sandwich, no egg, wanted to save time. Checked my email, realized the interview was actually in person, and drove to the Smart and Final plaza area ASAP and headed in. Looked like a pretty small place inside, though there was another door leading into the larger segment. Dr. Lisa Wang was talking to a parent(?) already and the interview itself went very quickly. I want to say 20 minutes. Pretty basic questions about my education and graduation, availability, multitasking/organization, with lots of quiet time — she was looking through the center's schedules and bouncing between chat messages on her laptop. Finally she said the centers were quite full but would like to have me on, so if I do accept the offer letter, I'll be starting on the 11th or the 21st. Very nice. We wrapped up and I headed back home and really felt relaxed for the first time in... I guess since mid-July or late June. I think trying to find a job has really put a damper on my month of August. Per usual I was on the computer most of the day but around 2:30pm I walked over to the newly opened "Dough Burger" shop and ordered a single burger with extra onions, regular fries, and a drink, came out to $12.90 (including tax). Fast service, about 5-6 minutes, with 5-6 people working and 2 others on their lunch break. Portion size was, in my opinion, on the smaller side but I would say typical for San Jose pricing. (I'm coming from Foster's Freeze pricing, which gives you about 20-30% more food per dollar — we have the lowest prices of the franchise in the area.) The base burger had a 2 ounce patty, pickles, and cheese. Shoe-string fries I would estimate to be a few ounces, like a small size or a kid's size. Soda came with the combo and I loaded up with Coke Zero; I think the water itself had an aftertaste from what clearly looked like a very, very new machine. If they don't straighten that out, I'd just go to the nearby 7/11 and pick up a Big Gulp. I'm complaining a lot but actually I think you're also paying for the convenience of having a burger shop that isn't McDonald's so close by the neighborhood. I would say these issues are growing pains and I'd love to stop by again next month. I walked back home, saw a few kids out of school (and was caught off-guard by how young they seemed), had a nap around 3:30 to 4:15. Unwound the rest of the day. Grandma made chicken soup with brown mushrooms and chopped herb/lemon garnish.
