Just finished reading The Hunger Games Trilogy. Jesus. Jesus! Who the hell can read this marathon of death and destruction and horror and think it's a love story? It's a war and trauma and death and impulse and fury story. Katniss is an unreliable narrator too, though not with as much raw literary flair as Johnny or Pelafina or Kinbote. Her stress and emotional volatility reads all too fiery — only because I lived similar highs and lows when I was her age. Soteriology of the Coherent 3.0 reads utopian compared to this. I don't remember Divergent (the first book at least) or The Testaments were this dark either. The only comparison I can think of is to The Handmaid's Tale, and even that had the virtue of only being one standalone book (until Atwood wrote and published The Testaments). Still I remember the movies being more ... exciting? Maybe I was too young. Mockingjay Part 2 came out in 2015, 2016... and I didn't read the books then at all. I'm not even sure I want to watch the movies. I watched half of the first one yesterday and realized they cut out so much stuff (though what they do have isn't distorted at all). Truncated. At least most of the dialogue is accurate.
