Been thinking of getting the RF 35mm f/1.8 for the last few days now, coincidentally lining up as a self-present as well. I'm not really impressed with the image stabilization and general light-collecting ability from my EF 28-105mm f/3.5-5.6, though it is pretty sharp for its age. The 35/1.8 is very much a grail lens, considering the $400 price. Though, it also comes with 4-5 stops of image stabilization on top of the innate ~f/2 lens speed. (The competitive Pergear 35mm/1.4 has a stop wider, but without image stabilization, loses net 3 stops of general light-gathering ability.)
Determining whether I would actually want to shoot at 35mm considering my preference for 50mm (and up) is another question. I find wide-angle lenses to be uniquely difficult to compose with to the point I even consider 40mm to be somewhat wide. On the other hand, 35mm is certainly more narrow than 24mm (the lens of which I've basically delegated to landscape and building faux-panoramas) and 28mm (basically my smartphone), and 28mm is my upper bound for perspective distortion relative to subject framing.
Taking a step back, I've broadly been pretty dissatisfied with how GAS-y my photography has been. The nature of the hobby is different from my interest in coffee. Online, there's no separation between amateur/hobby photo discussion and professional work-grade photo discussion. Photography is not yet a routine habit in my life; there is always the choice to turn on the camera and take photos (with the exception of my food photos, which has become more compulsory at this point).
Digital photography physically consumes very little, in comparison to the obligate need for the bean, because any turnover is at the level of pictures, or hardware. (Still working on getting GF2-like punchy colors and "grit" in post-processing the Canon RP's RAWs.) I guess when you feel you don't have many things to take photos of, you turn to switching out your gear. The issue with that, of course, is that you give yourself a future headache figuring out which lens of 5 or 6 to carry for a day. I'm almost nostalgic for my monk-like dedication to my FL 55/1.2 as my only-used lens for like 4 or 5 months last year.
