December 27th: Day trip to Napa. Had some slight angst over the thought that I would not participate in wine tasting myself, even though I was of age; as expected I didn't, but in retrospect that was probably for the better. Finding a place in Napa was surprisingly difficult, possibly because my dad's memories of the area were outdated from the last time he (and my mom?) visited over 20 years ago. We stopped by Pine Ridge and I was sent in to scout and see if I could secure a spot for us, but I got seriously mixed up and told them we had a far bigger party than I thought. The main host was generously gracious to us about the misunderstanding and even recommended Oaksville Grocery and Yountville; and to use ExploreTock to secure reservations the next time we were in town (maybe summer?). Oaksville was the unsung hero of the trip, with gourmet items, plenty of wine (not that I had any), and a little coffee (I definitely had, and needed, some). They even had Humboldt Fog cheese, which has been on my shopping list for years, though I wasn't sure if it would spoil in the car, so I passed. If only we could stay a bit longer! The sun set quick, and so we headed back home.
